I am sitting here at my house working (have I mentioned I love my job!) and I have the windows open. In the background, there are sounds of construction. At first I thought nothing of it, but then I realized that it is a sound that I have not heard in a long time, but it is a familiar sound. Our first house was new construction and we were one of the first in the neighborhood. On any given day, you would hear hammering, huge trucks driving through with cement or supplies, and music to keep the workers motivated. Now that we live in an "established" neighborhood, with little to no new construction around us, I don't hear those sounds anymore.
Sadly, our neighbor's house burned down last fall and they finally got it settled with the insurance to rebuild. Sadly, the insurance company was trying to argue that the structure was fine and they just needed to gut it. Really! Is that what you want to deal with after going through that kind of tragedy? Their house was a mess! Thankfully, they got it worked out and their new house is in the process of being built! It is cool to see on my morning runs, to see the progress that they have made and hopefully the hope that is being built for our neighbors!
Isn't it funny what memories can be evoked from things that seem so routine and ordinary!

I totally agree - little things can trigger BIG memories! Every time I smell lake water or lawn mower gas/fresh cut grass, I think of my Dad - it's like the smell just knocks me over with memories!
