The Molly Ringwalds

On Friday night, I got to meet up with my Collin County friends who just happened to be in the area. Actually, they had planned it like crazy because they are groupies! Okay, I can probably be thrown in that category as well. We went to the Glass Cactus to see the Molly Ringwalds. They are a fabulous 80's cover band. The cool thing is that we were not the "old" people there by any means.

Some funny stories...

There were some younguns there who wanted to be near the stage, but thought we were all so uncool. They kept making all sorts of faces and continually said, "I don't even know these songs." My friend retorted with, "I am sure the Jonas Brothers are playing somewhere."

As we were on our way, my friend sent me a text that said that the same guys that were next to us the last time we went, were once again next to us! Sad, but true!

There was a significantly older lady front and center dancing the night away! It was hilarious. If you think white girls can't dance, white grandmas don't stand a chance!

Next to the grandma was what we referred to as the Playboy bunnies. These girls had more of their gigantic fake boobs exposed than covered up! They did have nice bodies, but when you looked at their faces, you could tell that they were too old to be dressing like that! I believe there comes a time in one's life where dressing like a prostitute can no longer be excused by your age and not knowing any better!

All in all, we had a great time and will probably see them again the next time they are in town! If you ever get a chance, you should go see them. They are really entertaining!

Circle, meet Square

I was very fortunate to meet with one of my really good friends last week. She is one of my best adult friends (meaning that we met as adults, not college, etc.). We used to go to church together and since we moved to the other side of town, she is the one that I have seen the most of! She is a great friend and met me more than halfway to just hang out. She has also come over to our house, more times than I have ventured her way!

We met up at a Starbucks and actually closed the place down (they close at 10:30 evidently). We easily could have talked another couple hours, but were force to leave by the friendly barista. I guess it was a good thing, because it was a "school night." As we were sitting there talking she said she couldn't believe that we were such good friends, because we are pretty much opposites. As she puts it, she is a circle and I am a square. Pretty much everything about how we do things is different, but that is what makes our friendship so much fun! We each bring something different to the table and in a sense, complete each other. We did decide though, that we are just opposite ends of the same crazy spectrum!

She is also like a mentor to me, although she is just a little older than I am, she is much wiser! She is a fabulous mom, wife and an amazing Christian. I know that I can always ask her for advise in those areas! I do miss living closer to her, but thankfully, our friendship has survived the distance. Now if she up a chooses to move somewhere crazy, I might have to re-think! Just kidding!

Three's Company

In HS, we were all really good friends. It was me, Erin and Lindsay. Erin and I were friends starting in 6th grade or so, maybe before. A defining moment early in our friendship was getting matching Jon Heart purses, I know, I know. And our initials, first and last, were the same, so we thought that was kind of cool. Erin introduced me to Lindsay and lets just say the rest is history. One of my fondest memories with Lindsay is going to look for the car that she just knew her dad had bought her and was hiding at his friend's house. The three of us were really close all through school, we kind of went our separate ways towards the end of high school, I was on dance team and they were both in sports, but we always stayed friends. We were in each others weddings (well Erin missed mine and Lins because she was in the DR) and even when we were not talking every day, we could catch up in no time. Erin brought the three of us together, but I would say that Lindsay kept us together. Lindsay is really good at communication and always takes the initiative. It is funny now, because we are all doing the same things in our lives. We all are married with kids now and our kids are all about the same age. Unfortunately, we live in three different cities and don't get to see each other often. But...we will all be together in SA for the Rock and Roll Half Marathon, I bet the two of them never thought their little dance team, very nonathletic friend would be running half marathons! Anyway, I found these pictures and thought I would share them! I hope these pics bring back as fond of memories for Erin & Lindsay as they did for me!
Lindsay and Erin celebrating my 16th birthday! (They are both older than I am)
Waking me up on my 16th birthday! Very early I might add!

Erin and Lindsay, I think on Lindsay's birthday.

Stories From the Field

We have this thing at my company during our monthly meetings where people tell stories from the field. I thought it was an appropriate title for my recent trip. To say this weekend was a whirlwind is an understatement. I flew to Lubbock for my sister's college graduation and...

- We had serious plane delays, which has been my experience with American almost every time I fly. Anyway, at first we were waiting for a flight attendant, which to me is annoying and it seems like that shouldn't happen, don't they know when they have to work? Then a computer had to be changed out. Thank goodness we were in a hub airport and they obviously have extras laying around.
coffee filters
- Because of the delay, my "I can wait until I get to Lubbock to go to the bathroom" turned into, I have to pee on the plane! Nice, huh! I don't know the last time I had used the airplane bathroom before this flight, but it has been a while! I will say that the bathrooms are improved from what I remember. But a couple of observations...No one who is much bigger than I am can comfortably go to the bathroom in these, they are really small! And, they were using coffee in prepackaged filters as air freshner, quite strage, but it worked!
- My dad wanted to go to the Panhandle Plains Museum and Palo Duro Canyon while we were in Lubbock. So they picked us up from the airport and off we went. While we were in the Museum, it rained, just enough to make everything wet and slick. I fell coming out of the museum on the limestone steps and banged up my knee pretty good. And I did all of this 100% sober!
- I was glad to get home around 3:30 on Saturday and spend time with my family! But then, I got a call from a group of my friends who were staying at a hotel close by and decided to go out with them. I had a blast, but look for the details in another post!!

Judgement

Unfortunately a lot of times what we say and do, sometimes comes off like we are judging people. I was up feeding Linus the other night and turned on the TV, not much was on, but I found a Sex and the City rerun. The jist of the story was that Carrie walked in on Samantha "servicing" the Worldwide Express deliver guy. Over brunch the famous 4 were making jokes about it and Samantha got upset, even though they always did stuff like that. She took it as they were judging her. She and Carrie talked later and Carrie explained that she wasn't judging her.

Anyway, this made me think of the situation I alluded to earlier. I hurt one of my college friends recently because of something I wrote. While I stand behind my opinion (I have deleted the post) my timing was not approrpiate. I wrote about something a while ago and it published soon after she told me that she was going through the exact thing I wrote about. Although it wasn't about her, or driven by what she was going through, it seemed like it, not only to her, but to other of our friends who knew what was going on. I felt really bad, my intention was not to hurt her at all, but I did. It is kind of like what Carrie experienced in that episode, fitting because that show is something that my college friends and I shared. I have apologized to my friend and I hope that she knows that I would NEVER, EVER judge her. I love her, and all of my college friends, and want to be there for them through everything! They each bring something to my life that no one else does or could. Even though we are all different, we still share some pretty amazing memories and are friends no matter what! Love you girls!

Oh, and I just noticed as I was schedulilng this as my next post, it is going to land on one of those college friend's birthday! So, happy birthday Darla!

Reconnecting With Old Friends

I think I have said before that I am not that great of a friend. Not in a bad way, at least I don't think so, but I am just not very good at keeping in touch with people (something I am trying to work on). Lately I have had a chance to reconnect with some friends of old!

My College Girls - Most of my friends from college live in the metroplex with me, but we are spread out. We all have ALOT going on, not that that is an excuse, but we do. Anyway, we got to reconnect at a wedding just recently and it was nice! It was so good to hang out with them again, and most of the time, it is like no time has passed!

My College Work Friend - I met my friend Deanna at our PT job in college, bank tellers. We became fast friends and we were in each others weddings. I haven't talked to her much since she moved out of town, but have kept tabs on her through her mom (her mom is does my kids b-day cakes). Her mom told me that she was pregnant and I emailed her to tell her congrats. Since we are done having kids, I told her she could have all of my maternity clothes and all of the baby stuff! She was so excited and when I went to drop them off on my way to SA, we hung out for about an hour. Now we are emailing regularly and are back in touch, again, like no time had passed.

My HS friend - I only keep in touch with one of my friends from HS, Lindsay, that is until recently. Because of blogs and email, we have been reconnected. It is so awesome because we have so much in common and like she said, "it seems like we were separated at birth" We will get to see each other again in November for a Half-Marathon that all three of us (including Lindsay) will be running together. I can't wait!!!

Like I have said, I am not great at maintaining friendships, but God has brought these lovely ladies back into my life for a reason! And He is fostering some new friendships with what used to be friends of friends!

The Next Best Thing

I am not a huge drinker, but for some reason, my glass of wine has been something I am really missing this pregnancy. So, right now I am having a snack, cheese and crackers and some grapes. That is close right? Almost takes me back to those good old Baylor days! I miss going to wine bars with my friends and sitting on the patio just enjoying each others company and a good glass of wine. I am a red wine drinker myself, but most of the girls drank white wine. We had a great wine bar that we would go to in Waco out by the lake.

One of my favorite memories and pictures from Baylor is when we were celebrating our graduation. We decided that each day of the week leading up to graduation, we would do something we could only do in (or would remind us of) Waco. We had so much fun creating our "Schedule" for that week and for me, it holds so many memories. Anyway, I have a great picture of all of us girls at the wine bar, with tan skin and sunglasses, big smiles on our faces and the sun setting in the background. I will have to try and find that picture and scan and add it (this was before the digital day). I love looking back at my scrapbook (yes, I scrapbooked in college) from that time, we were truly carefree and living life to the fullest! I love my Baylor girls!!! Some of them I still keep in touch with regularly, others we send the occasional email and Christmas Card, but they will always have a special place in my heart!

Classmates.Com

Have you ever tried to find any of your old classmates on any of those sites? I haven't but mainly because since I grew up in a select area, I pretty much know what everyone is doing, where they are, etc. But, this got me thinking.... I had two best friends in HS, Lindsay and Erin (and we had the same initials, ES). I still keep in touch with Lindsay, pretty much daily we talk, thank you Sprint to Sprint! Erin, I don't really talk to very much, but I keep up with her through occasional emails, and reading her blog.

Anyway, I was thinking the other day about the three of us, interestingly enough, we are all three married, Erin and Lindsay have two kids and I am close to having two, all of which are relatively close in age. So, I started thinking about their lives and my life and if it was different from what I thought we would be doing or have done. For example, Erin and I were both very career focused, or so it seemed. Lindsay always knew she wanted to be a teacher, and sure enough she became one. Erin is incredibly smart and I thought she would be a doctor or a lawyer, or something like that. I am not sure what her degree was in, but she ended up doing missionary work in the DR where she met her husband. The weird part about this, is that if I had to put a bet, back in HS, who would be a stay at home mom, it would not be Erin, I would put Lindsay first, then me, then Erin, but who stays at home, Erin.

On a more individual note, Lindsay was very involved in all sorts of Christian groups in HS, we all attended church, but Lindsay seemed to have a more personal relationship, at least than I did. Lindsay actually had a big part in leading me to a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, but now, it seems like Erin and I are more involved in church than Lindsay is. Not saying that Lindsay is not an active Christian, but she does not go to church regularly. I do think it is still a big part of her life, she just doesn't have a church family, like I had before we moved and I am assuming Erin does by the way she writes.

On an athletic front, I would vote for ME as the least athletic. Erin was in basketball, Lindsay was in Tennis and me, well, I was on dance team! But, Lindsay and I have run marathons and half marathons (another thing Lindsay got me in to), not sure if Erin has, but she would be the person out of the three of us that I would have thought would do that, you should see her legs!!! I think we are all happy with our lives, and I definitely believe that we are all doing what God had planned for us, but somethings seem so different than how I would have guessed in HS. Do you have any friends/situations like this?
