Home Ec

As I have mentioned before, I am somewhat of a domestic goddess. Okay, not really, but I do more than a lot of women these days, we actually don't take much to the dry cleaners. So it got me thinking the other day....

I never took Home Ec. Not sure if it was even offered at my high school, but if so it was an elective. So anyway, I just fly by the seat of my pants. I am not sure my mom really told me what to do with laundry, I am sure she did and I didn't listen. I just kind of do laundry. I don't really know the right way to iron, I just iron everything on high. I don't really know what I should use to clean stuff, I just clean. I am sure there is an acceptable way of doing all of this stuff, like a good 50's wife!

I think Home Ec should be required for everyone. I think it is good to know how to do all of that stuff, even if you don't have to do it. I think it is good for boys to take too. Every boy will most likely at some point in his life live with only men. They should be able to clean up after themselves and do their laundry, even if it is only temporary! Thankfully, the internet can be very useful for finding a lot of this information, but I think it should be required in High School. If we are truly preparing them for going out in to the real world, we should do more than just teach them biology that they might never use! So, that is my soapbox, pun intended!
